OUR WORK

Tackling sources of stress in pregnancy

We are working with our community partners at Healthy Start, a nonprofit organization with the mission of improving maternal and child health in Allegheny County. We are leading a study called MOMI-COVID to examine sources of stress in pregnancy during the pandemic.

Pittsburgh suffers from one of the starkest disparities in the U.S. between Black and White women in risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes (preterm birth, infant mortality, maternal mortality). We are pursuing placental biomarker-based strategies to evaluate early points at which these differences may first be measurable in pregnancy. Our aim is to identify structural and individual-level causes of stress and discrimination, their relationship to specific exposures in pregnancy, and their physiologic effects in pregnancy. We are doing this through our MOMI-COVID study, where we have partnered with Healthy Start and Magee-Womens Hospital. Our goal is to create a pathway to equitable approaches to a healthy pregnancy.
